“An American Pledge”

Verse 1 I remember standing in the classroom, as the school day was just about to start, We turned as one to face our country’s flag, and I placed my hand proudly on my heart; We spoke together with innocence, not knowing of our history, But in time we learned from our veterans that freedom is not free!
CHORUS * I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible With liberty and justice for all!
Verse 2 As the years went by these words began to fade, We only seemed to speak them in our youth; I wish for us to give this oath new life, For in these treasured words lies the truth!
CHORUS *
Bridge And I’ll never forget the ones who died for freedom, Defending this land on shores near and far; Let us stand together and sing to honor our nation’s flag, And their souls will live on in ev’ry stripe and star!
CHORUS *
Tag One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all! With liberty and justice for all!

An American Pledge is a new patriotic song that sets our nation’s “Pledge of Allegiance” to music. Penned by Francis Bellamy and first published on September 8th, 1892, the pledge is featured in this song as the chorus, with original music and additional lyrics composed by Peter Wilson, a native of West Virginia and violinist with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, DC. The images depicted in the opening verse of An American Pledge are a reflection of the memories most Americans have of reciting the pledge as children. While paying tribute to our veterans and those who have died for the cause of freedom, An American Pledge seeks to honor their memory by encouraging us all to keep our pledge alive. The song was premiered at Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia on the 109th anniversary of the first publishing of the pledge, September 8th, 2001--just three days before the tragic events that forever changed America. |
